Mount Sinai is a 2285 m-high mountain in the Sinai region. Also called the Moses Mountain by the Bedouin. At the foot of the mountain is St Katherine Monastery where the burning bush of Moses stands until this day. This is a perfect addition to our “Egypt’s Top 10” and “See The Red Sea Coral” tours.
What sites we will visit Mount Sinai & St Katherine Monastery
Itinerary (1 day/1 night)
We depart from Dahab per bus at approximately 11:30PM to make a lengthy 2-hour drive to Mount Sinai. When we reach the monastery, we will brief the group on how the hike up the mountain will commence. We start summiting the mountain at approximately 1550 meters above sea level, at 1:30AM, where a trained Bedouin guide will take the lead at a speedy pace with the fit hikers.
As for the less fit – you are in good hands – our tour leader will always walk at the back ensuring no one is left behind. The hike up the mountain takes approximately 3 hours depending on fitness and the last part of the summit includes 773 steps.
This sounds like quite a tough walk, but trust that the sunrise you will see later this morning will be worth every step up the mountain.
We will lead you to the perfect platform for a catnap before the sun smiles over the endless mountain range. Get your cameras ready and snap as many shots as you can. Close your eyes and sense that you are standing at the top of the world for a moment in time.
As soon as we are all ready, we will make our walk down the mountain. Catch a glimpse of the Greek Orthodox Chapel up the mountain where it is believed Moses received the Ten Commandments.
At the foot of the mountain is our second sight of this trip. The monastery of Saint Katherine. It is one of the oldest continuously functioning Christian monasteries in the world. We will have
breakfast here.
The monastery library preserves the second largest collection of early codices and manuscripts in the world, outnumbered only by the Vatican Library. Also see the burning bush of Moses.
This site is sacred to Christianity and Islam.
TIPS ON WHAT TO TAKE WITH :
· Do take torchlight with spare batteries. Although the routes we take are steady and level, additional light will allow you to walk more at ease in the darkness. · During the winter, wear layered clothes so that you can remove some of the layering if you desire. · There are rest stops every few kilometers where you can buy chocolate for energy or warm up with some coffee or tea. · Although blankets are available for rent at the summit, it is recommended to take a sleeping bag while we gather for sunrise.
